What sets your doll customizations apart from all the others?
Since there are lot of people doing faceups and it can’t really differ from one another, I personally think my faceup is more fast, and more happy/bright looking.
Are there any sort of projects you’ve been hoping to work on but just haven’t gotten around to it?
I am not planning any big projects now, but I have to paint my Peakswoods FOB Morimoth soon. I always change her faceup, but nothing seems perfect on her… just yet. :3
What was the most challenging thing you have ever done thus far?
There was one client who wasn’t satisfied with my faceup after I showed her the finished photos, and I had to make correction 8 times. And finally the client said she like the first one the most.. It was really sad. If she just asked me to re-do the faceup, I would have done better, but changing the finished faceup 8 times was really hard for me and her.
How has your style evolved over time, and where do you see it going in the future?
My color palette was more vibrant in the past. I’m looking forward to improve my skills toward more natural style. :3
Describe your perfect client. Do you like to get a lot of direction, or just be given a general mood, or do you like to see visual examples?
My perfect client would tell me what kind of expression he/she wants for the head, then maybe color palette. Visual examples would be nice too, but it’s just that I don’t want to copy other faceup artist’s and I don’t think I even have skills to do that! ^^;
Of all the face-ups/customizations you’ve done, do any stand out to you in particular? Howso?
My Volks MSD Misia. I always wanted Misia/Shinshiya/F12 mold since 2001, but I never got chance to get one & the mold got discontinued in 2007 I believe. But I was lucky enough to get damaged one secondhand, and I did full restorations and faceup on her. I worked on her for a long time, and she seems to get my attention a lot.
Do you paint/alter other types of dolls, and if so, how does that compare with working on BJDs? If you do other types of art (drawing, painting, etc) does that influence your faceup style?
I’ve painted Obitsu, DD, and other dolls (like those girly once you can buy from, ex. Target. :3) I love to paint them too! They are just too adorable and fun to paint. I am a communication art student so I do drawing/painting/designing, and I actually think my experience with dolls tend to influence my professional work. ^^; because I love BJDs SO much and played with them over 10 years, I can’t even imagine how much influence BJDs gave to my life. I love it.
Have you ever refused a commission? Why? Or if not, can you think of a circumstance where you might?
I’ve never refused a commission, but I had warned customers before they fully decide to commission me. I only warn them if they are commissioning me PVC Vynyl dolls like Obitsu and DD, because no matter what you do there is a very high chance to stain. I have no problem with covering previous stain with faceups, but I just wanted to warn them because I knew those heads are precious for owners. Luckly, none of Obitsu and DD owners backed out and they all liked new faceups I did for their dolls.
How important is customer feedback to your creative process?
A good feedback is always nice, but I would always happily listen to critiques because they improve my skills. J
Is there a mold, doll, or company that you prefer to work on?
No, I love to work on various dolls! J but I hope I can work with Volks SD16 Pearl someday just because I cherish Pearl mold a lot. >.<
Do you prefer working on male or female dolls? Why?
Like I said before, since majority of my dolls are female, working with female dolls are little bit more comfortable. But I love boys too! ;_; …
What is your background? Have you had any special schooling (art school, sculpture, painting, etc)?
I major in art. I took/taking various art classes like Painting, Drawing, Design, Jewelry, Sculpture~
When you were a child did you ever work on dolls or create with similar things?
Yes, If 6th grade in elementary school is considered as a child XD
Do you have any other interests that might have helped you in your development of customizing ABJD (like customizing other dolls, action figures, etc)? Please tell us about them.
I love to create my own BJD from scratch, so far I’ve made only two though.
Do you have any other interests? Collections?
I collect re-ments and I love to sew Lolita dresses for human! 😀
Are there any painting techniques that can make a face look more masculine or feminine?
Probably shading and eyeliner, and bottom lashes.
How long does it usually take to do a face-up (or custom alteration job)?
2~3 days to a week!
Can you offer any helpful hints to the amateur face-up artists? Can you recommend a list of supplies including colors, paints & pastels etc?
When you use pastels it is better to grind them on fine sandpaper. Always use paint thinner when using acrylic paints, and don’t use oil-based materials(including human makeups and sharpies) on your dolls no matter what.
Do you have a favorite medium you like to work with when not creating for BJDs in your spare time?
Just pencil and paper is perfect for me :3
How long have you been doing face-ups/customizing BJDs?
10 years. Although I started taking commissions in 2010.
Closing Comments (anything you’d like to tell us)?
Thank you everyone who took time to read this and thanks to Mercy. I think BJD hobby is very interactive and social hobby, especially to older people because usually dolls are not considered as mature thing.
My belief is that, everyone should do whatever they will enjoy and cherish, as long as you are sure that you’ll not regret your choice later. And that is the reason I chose BJD and BJD faceups. It’s what I love to do and I am happy with it, and I hope everyone who looks at my photos and commission me could share my joy and happiness too. Thank you again, for taking time.
