Fashion Designer Spotlite: Popomini Part II

Continued…

What fabrics do you love to use? Accessories?
I love to use cotton fabric so much especially if there is some texture in the fabric.

What outfit do you think was your best and worst? Why?
My best work of me may be Pearl series. There is Peach Pearl set released now and other pearl sets next. I’m pleased with Pearl series because it is my favorite corset style with lace, tutu and match able accessories. About my worst work, I think none, but I always feel bad if the outfit is not fit or does not like I think or be sent to customers when there are something I forget.

Any tips for the beginner doll fashion maker?
You must be able to measure doll and try trial and error to tailor doll clothing regularly because harder you work, better you make, no matter you can’t make pattern, if you can adapt instant pattern, then you can make many style of costume.

When you were a child did you ever work on dolls or create with similar things? If so, what were they?
When I was young, I love to play paper doll so much but I had ever made something for other dolls because my family did not have any money for something needless like that.

Do you have any other interests that might have helped you in your development of customizing ABJD (like customizing other dolls, action figures, etc)? Please tell us about them.
I’m interested about porcelain doll and rag doll. I like to see them in beautiful costume.

Do you have any other interests? Collections?
I love to listen to many style of music especially J-Rock. So I have some J-rock artists’ art book and CD. Oh, moreover, another collection I’m proud of is my lace collection. ^^

Tell us about your own dolls. Do you have any? If so how many and which ones? Has your collection impacted your fashion business and if so in what way?
I have my own dolls about 10 dolls from Dollmore, Volks, Migidoll, Dollzone, Glorydoll, Jollyplus, and Minimee. Usually I make most of costumes from my own dolls’ outfits that have many styles. So the costume in each collection are up to which doll I want to make it for at that time.

Why choose clothing design as a form of Self Expression?
I choose clothing design as a form of Self Expression because I love clothing and love to dress up, and also love to make costume. I think I am happy the most when I see the costume be finished completely. When I put my dolls on clothing, I’m so happy to see them lovely, pretty, cool, or else, that are themselves.

How long does it take from start to finish on a typical outfit to create and complete?
For ordinary costume, I take time about 1-2 days per an outfit. Complicated pattern will take time more.

How do you like to work best with a custom order for a client? With total freedom to create your vision, or do you like some feedback/interchange with a client who might have an idea or theme they would like to see realized?
I like to get some interchange from a customer to be guideline for making the costume he like the most, but I also love when the client give me freedom to create something in the costume, because I want to see it appropriate, beautiful and satisfied its owner in the same time.

Are there fashions or styles you would like to make, but haven’t? Why haven’t you?
I would like to make a full set of Louis style costume, but I haven’t because I still don’t have time to make it.

How important are fashion trends to you (i.e. what is going on in real life/human wear) and to your doll clothing? Do other doll seamstresses or fashion trends on the board (or even on other boards, etc) influence you at all?
Fashion trends from other places influence me a little bit about making clothing collection at that time because sometimes I must observe what style people want to dress their dolls or what style is popular. However, all outfits must make in my own style because I must like them, too.

Do you take on commissions? If so have you ever turned down any? Are there certain commissions you like or dislike?
I take on commissions. I rarely turn it down because I think it is a chance to make different style of costume. The commission I like the most is Madame Pompadour’s costume because I like this Louis style so much. About the commission I dislike, I think nothing because if I don’t like it, I will not make it. However, the commission that is very difficult or not impressed, surely there is. ^^”

Tell us about your family. What do they think about your dolls and your business?
My family does not complain about my dolls and my business. They just look at me and warn that I don’t buy new dolls too much. And about my business, my mother said that if it was her, she won’t do it because it looks complicated.

Closing Comments (anything you’d like to tell us about you or about your business in general)?
I like many styles of costume, not restrict in either style. Something I like is from my inner feeling, not by trends or fashions. I love to adapt any trends to be my own style my best and no need to care for what someone say. I seriously intend to make all of my work as best as I can. Thank you for everyone who read this article. I’m so happy if it will be helpful for you. ^^

Thank you for the interview, Popomini!
